Review: Old 37 Starring Kane Hodder & Bill Moseley (Available on DVD Today)

OLD-37-Movie-Poster-Art

What is better than a film that stars Kane Hodder or Bill Moseley? A film that stars both of them! The duo of horror icons play Darryl (Moseley) and his little brother Jon Roy (Hodder). Old 37 is a twisted tale that is sure make you think twice about calling 911.

Samantha-Darryl-6

Old 37 was written by Paul Travers and Joe Landes, directed by Alan Smithee. Besides Hodder and Moseley, the film stars Jake Robinson, Sascha Knopf, Olivia Alexander, Brandi Cyrus and Kenneth Simmons.

There are not enough synonyms for “awesome” to use that would accurately convey how great this film is. It is original and chilling with a dash of comedy. For me, it brought back the Chop-Top Bill Moseley, many of the lines that he had reminded me of his lines from TCM 2 when they break into the radio station studio, I was waiting to hear “lick my plate you dog dick!“. Kane did what he does best, he destroyed people. It was a bit like watching him play a combination of Jason Voorhees and Victor Crowley, he was shy, silent and brutal. Combining Moseley’s humor with Hodder’s intensity make for the perfect storm.

OLD37FINALPOSTERFEAT

Old 37 is a bit like a drama meets horror, it’s almost like watching two different films in one. More times than not, those types of films tend to fall apart and only leave the audience scratching their heads, but the different stories within Old 37 are blended perfectly to make up one awesome movie. The conflict within this film are endless, there is domestic violence, insanity, murder, revenge, betrayal, standard bitchy teenage behavior and so much more. What’s not to love?

The plot twists are insane. I saw a couple of them coming, but it was entertaining nonetheless,I enjoyed it and I am not going to hold it against the film. There were a few that did catch me of guard. Long time horror fans may see what is around the corner, but if you are newer to the genre, you are in for one twisted roller coaster ride.

The cast as a whole was phenomenal. There were veterans and some newer to the game, but everyone was so professional that it was difficult to tell the difference between them.

Final Verdict

If you are into disturbing, revenge filled films, Old 37 is perfect. I loved the film and would love to see Travers write another film and include Moseley and Hodder, his writing combined with their talent and chemistry make for one hell of an awesome horror movie. I am going to have to recommend Old 37 to everyone that I know and you should probably tell a couple friends too.

Unfriended: A New Reason To Watch What You Post

11390038_858246540936647_8675903488097001819_n

2015 has brought us quite a few new horror films, but Unfriended is a horror film for a new generation. Combining bullying and the social media frenzy with some immature, mean teens, the film is the ultimate new age horror.

tumblr_nlqikygLDf1u3yjjro1_500

Unfriended was written by Nelson Greaves (Sleepy Hollow TV series) and stars Heather Sossaman (Desecrated), Matthew Bohrer (Weed Shop: The Musical), Courtney Halverson (The Hammer), Shelley Henning (Ouija), Moses Storm (The 4 to 9ers), Will Peltz (Paranoia), Renee Olstead (Still Standing) and Jacob Wysocki (Pitch Perfect).

Shelley Henning, Blaire, was phenomenal. She is a genuine actress; her emotions were believable which made the film feel more authentic and more terrifying. You want to feel bad for her, but you know she’s not innocent.

Shelley Henning as Blaire

Anyone that loves 80’s slasher films can appreciate a good jump scare; Unfriended is full of them. There is no visible killer and it’s a bunch of teenagers on Skype, so how else are you going to make the film terrifying? Loud bangs, lights going on and off, camera malfunctions, you get the gist. Every jump scare incorporated in the film only add to the already frightening story line. I appreciated the effort that was made to creating the scares. It may not get some of you horror veterans, but if you want to introduce a younger fan to horror and scare the pants off of them at the same time, Unfriended will get the job done.

Capture1-620x330

There isn’t much character background given, but throughout the film, their darkest secrets are brought to light. By mid-film, you will find yourself almost rooting for their demise. Typically in a horror movie, there is at least one innocent soul, but everyone is guilty in Unfriended, everyone has a secret.

When the trailer first debuted, I heard a lot of mixed feelings, but after watching the film not once, but twice for myself, I can honestly say that for a “teen thriller”, the film is incredible. If this type of film is the future of the genre, I’m OK with that. Unfriended is original, thrilling, suspenseful and visually awesome. Whether you have been watching horror movies for decades, months or days, you will appreciate this one. I am 26-years-old and have been a horror nerd since I was about 7 and my niece (who watched the film with me in theaters) is 14-years-old and becoming a horror nerd, we both loved it. As previously mentioned, if you are looking for a film to introduce a horror nerd in training to the genre, Unfriended is perfect.

I love a good paranormal horror movie, and when you throw technology into the mix, it is even better. Unfriended is not just a ghost story, but I feel it is also kind of a cautionary tale. Teens partied, one got out of her mind drunk, her friends posted the video to the internet, girl got bullied, girl killed herself. Underneath the fake horror is a real horror story, cyber bullying; sure, nobody gets this kind of punishment, but kids do die over this very same stuff. Unfriended is like a boogeyman story for the tech generation.

All in all, Unfriended is a quality “new age” horror film that I would watch again. I am going to have to recommend this one to you guys; give it a watch and let me know what you think.

Unfriended is currently available on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital HD in the US, and is currently available on Digital HD in the UK and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray September 7th.

The Video That Started It All: The Preylude: A Volumes of Blood Short Film

11295930_1591451091133556_6861223533359801225_nThe biggest selling point of any film is the trailer, some trailers come to us in the form of a short film. The brains behind the new horror anthology, Volumes of Blood, put together a short film to help get their film made. Say hello to The Preylude: A Volumes of Blood Short Film, (no that is not a spelling error) the short that started it all.

The Preylude was written and directed by P.J. Starks and stars Shelby Miller, Robert Denton and Chad Ray as “The Hood”. The concept for the short is fantastic, and what makes it even more scary, it is completely believable as the given situation has and could happen. Chad Ray makes for one intimidating villain, his large stature and Kane Hodder-like movements only add to the greatness of The Preylude

With just under 7 minutes to tell the story, The Preylude gets straight to the point. There are no unnecessary fillers, the entire short is filled with only quality content. The cliffhanger ending will leave you wanting more.

What does The Preylude: A Volumes of Blood Short Film entail?

The fifth unsuspecting victim is stalked by a sociopath hell bent on making her suffer. Will she survive or will she die trying?

Enjoy the show!

‘Choose Their Kill’: A New YouTube Series That Puts You In Control

CTK LOGO

Have you ever watched a horror movie and thought to yourself, “that kill would have been so much cooler if he had….”? Me too! Thanks to Aaron Mento (Standards of Living) and horror genius, Eli Roth, not only can you watch the kills, but you can interactively choose how the killer will take out their victim, you can even choose to be nice and let them go.

MIKO BOW

Choose Their Kill is awesome not only for letting you interact with what you are viewing, but each episode is only a couple of minutes long, so if you’re short on time, you can still get your slasher fix. Every episode is directed by Aaron Mento who shot the feature length film, Standards of Living entirely on an iPad.

BRAD HATES COOKIES

If you are into horror that is heavily inspired by the 80’s slasher and cartridge video games and want to be more involved in how the story ends, Choose Their Kill is perfect for you. I can personally guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. Each episode is entertaining and creative, not to mention 100% original. There really isn’t anything to dislike about it. The best way I can describe it is Mortal Kombat meets slasher film with a dash of interactive goodness. It’s the closest you will come to playing a video game without actually playing one.

SOCKET STRANGLE - Compost Death

There is a new episode every Thursday on the CryptTV YouTube channel. To stay up to date on all that is Choose Their Kill, follow Aaron Mento (@AaronMento), Eli Roth (@eliroth) and the Choose Their Kill (@ChooseTheirKill) on twitter.

‘Volumes of Blood’: The Best Horror Anthology Since Trick-r-Treat

11295930_1591451091133556_6861223533359801225_n

It has been 8 years since the release of the 2007 horror anthology Trick-r-Treat , and ever since, there have been horror anthologies released in its honor, but none of them have even come close to the quality of the film. Thankfully, that has all been changed by P.J. Starks, Nathan Milliner (yes the guy that does all of those awesome Scream! Factory and HorrorHound covers) and Todd Martin. Volumes of Blood is an anthology film that horror fans can be proud of, it’s not some cheap knock off of what has already been done, it is gory, original and for a lack of better terms, fucking amazing!

Synopsis:

A sociology student gathers several friends at the local library on Halloween night to help him create a new urban legend with deadly consequences; Lily is in for a late night of researching and needs something to keep her going. It isn’t until she’s approached by a stranger that her luck may change – for the worse; a typical night of work for a librarian becomes a classic ghost story with a modern twist. Sometimes you can’t keep a bad book down; Sidney is allowed to stay after hours to study for a test. It’s not until she awakens in the darkened library that she realizes the truth of what lurks among the books after midnight. She better pray she doesn’t become the prey; Paige faces regrets that she’d do anything to take back. When an ancient and arcane spell book falls into her lap, she decides to make a grave decision. Be careful what you wish for, it might just kill you.

Volumes of Blood stars Kristine Renee Farley (Happy Hooker Bang Bang), Jim O’Rear (The Deepening), Roni Jonah (Hell House), Jason Crowe (The Zombie Movie), Jakob Bilinski (Obsolescence), P.J. Starks (A Mind Beside Itself), Kevin Roach (Happy Hooker Bang Bang) and a host of other indie horror greats. The biggest complaint many people have about indie films in general is the lack of talent and overacting, but this cast was phenomenal. There were scenes that required a bit of an homage to the corny acting of the 1980’s, but it was done intentionally and only enhanced the overall quality of the film. For example, the opening scene, I felt, was a beautiful nod to the 80’s slasher films, Friday the 13th in particular. As a fan of that sub-genre, I couldn’t have been more proud of the execution of the scene and the fact that it was even done at all.

Grab from the opening scene of Linda

The score of a horror film has always been just as important to me as great writing or a flawless cast, and Tony McKee’s score was incredible. It was no overly dramatic and matched the theme and feel of the film perfectly. At approximately 6 minutes in, there is a nod to Halloween via music.

Volumes of Blood had every element a horror film should have and so much more. It is going to be extremely hard for anyone else to top this anthology. If you’re looking for a film that will make you jump, possibly make your stomach turn, that will get your date clinging to you like cheap fabric on a hot day and pays a wonderful tribute to all of the classics, Volumes of Blood is the film for you. I could not find a single element to complain about, which is a rare occurrence. I truly cannot recommend this film enough.

Kickstarter: Occam’s Razor- A USC Thesis Film

11204705_10152891468223004_111596650_o

Independent horror is the backbone of the genre today, the world of horror would not be the same without hardworking film school students taking risks. USC film student, Alex Parslow, has created a kickstarter campaign to help fund his thesis film, Occam’s Razor

What is Occam’s Razor? It is an atmospheric horror film in the vein of films like The Exorcist, Shutter Island and Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Synopsis:

Set in 1851, “Occam’s Razor” is about a post-mortem photographer who is called into a small community where dozens of children have mysteriously died. He soon realizes the spirits of the deceased are trying to communicate to him, leading him to uncover the town’s dark and twisted secret.

Characters sell a film just as much as the screenplay, and the concept/character art that I have seen for Occam’s Razor looks phenomenal. Period pieces are very difficult to make look historically accurate, but the team behind this film nailed it.

There are two very notable Hollywood names involved with Occam’s Razor, Beth Grant (No Country for Old Men) and Carmen Argenziano (The Godfather: Part II). Grant is set to play the role of Sister Edith and Argenziano is set to play the role of Father Russo.

The filmmakers behind this sure to be great film have spent the last 3 years honing and developing their skills at USC School of Cinematic Arts, the #1 ranked film school in the world. Meet the crew below.

Director’s Statement:

“Occam’s Razor” is at once a graduate USC thesis film as well as a proof of concept for a feature length version of the same story. The film is a classic Gothic horror with a unique twist, set in a conservative religious town in 19th century Pennsylvania. The film is to be directed by USC School of Cinematic Arts MFA-candidate Alex Parslow, who co-wrote with Andre Kovalov. The two recently made a splash with their script Apex Dark, which landed them on both the “Hit List” and “Young and Hungry List,” for best unproduced screenplays in the industry. Through this they have secured representation with Lee Stobby Entertainment and are already taking meetings on the development of “Occam’s Razor”, and are eager to develop a fully conceived version of the short. In addition, both Director Alex Parslow and Producer Jonathan Maurer are co-writers on upcoming James Franco films, “Actors Anonymous” and “Don Quixote: The Ingenious Gentleman of La Mancha”.

Parslow’s goal to create Occam’s Razor is currently set at $10,000, and of that sum, $1,435 has been raised. There are currently 21 days left to help fund this film, the campaign will end on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 2:59 am EDT.
